Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about EV charger installation, solar installations, and electrical services from GMD Electrical.

—EV Charger Installation

A standard home EV charger installation in Central Scotland typically costs between £550 and £1,200 for a 7kW smart charger, including supply and installation. The exact price depends on your property's existing electrical setup, cable run length, and the charger brand you choose. We provide free, no-obligation quotes — contact us to get an accurate price for your home.

Most home EV charger installations are completed within half a day — typically 3 to 4 hours. More complex installations involving longer cable runs or consumer unit upgrades may take a full day. We'll give you a clear timeframe when we survey your property.

In most cases, no. Domestic EV charger installations in Scotland are classed as permitted development and do not require planning permission. Exceptions may apply for listed buildings or properties in conservation areas. We'll advise you during your free survey if any permissions are needed.

We install a wide range of leading EV charger brands including Ohme, Hypervolt, Andersen, Zappi, Wallbox, and Pod Point. We'll recommend the best option for your vehicle, home setup, and budget during your free consultation.

The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant is available for flat owners and renters, covering up to £350 towards installation. Owner-occupiers of houses are no longer eligible for the domestic grant (removed in 2022). The Workplace Charging Scheme is available for businesses. We can advise you on current grant eligibility during your free quote.

Yes. We install EV charging points for businesses, car parks, and commercial properties across Central Scotland. We can design and install multi-unit charging solutions and advise on the Workplace Charging Scheme grant.

—Solar Installations

Yes — solar panels work effectively in Scotland. They generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunlight or heat, so they produce power even on overcast days. Scotland receives enough daylight hours to make solar a worthwhile investment for most homes and businesses.

A typical domestic solar PV system (3–4kW) costs between £5,000 and £8,000 installed. Larger systems or those with battery storage will cost more. All solar installations currently benefit from 0% VAT in the UK. We provide free, detailed quotes tailored to your property and energy usage.

Absolutely — and it's one of the smartest combinations you can make. A solar-integrated EV charger lets you charge your car using free, clean energy generated from your roof. We specialise in designing combined solar and EV charging systems that maximise your energy savings.

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) requires energy suppliers to pay you for surplus electricity your solar panels export back to the grid. To qualify, your system must be installed by an MCS-certified installer. We can advise you on SEG tariffs and eligibility as part of your free solar quote.

—General Electrical Services

We cover Central Scotland and the surrounding areas, including Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk, Motherwell, Hamilton, Cumbernauld, Livingston, Paisley, East Kilbride, and Lanarkshire. If you're unsure whether we cover your area, get in touch and we'll let you know.

Yes. We carry out full consumer unit upgrades to modern RCD-protected boards, ensuring your home meets current wiring regulations. A consumer unit upgrade is often required before installing an EV charger or solar system if your existing board is outdated.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a formal inspection of your property's electrical installation. It's required by law for rental properties in Scotland (every 5 years) and is recommended for homeowners buying or selling a property. We carry out EICR testing across Central Scotland.

Yes. GMD Electrical are fully accredited, certified, and carry comprehensive public liability insurance. All our work is carried out to the latest wiring regulations (18th Edition) and we issue the appropriate certification on completion of every job.
